Everytime I see Eggman talk in Colors/ Generations/ Lost world, it looks like this to me.
Am I the only one?
oh, and Shiny new Sonic Dissected, probably not going to upload it on Deviantart.

Was already hesistating, but there's a random glitch that I can't fix anyway, to help my decision even further.

DOn't recall that, tough I suppose Final fantasy has the same "Animators are bored while characters jus stand and talk" problem.
Altough they at least occasionaly fall off a cliff or make a train explode.

Oh god, this made me laugh much more than I thought it would, because it's so true.

I'll never understand why they put so much emphasis on Eggman gesturing all over the place while talking.

Then again he didn't do it nearly as much in Lost World.

wow, i never noticed that. just checked some cutscenes of recent sonic games and you´re right! XD
it reminds me of eggman´s animation in the egg viper fight from sonic adventure when he´s like "See if you can make it through here, sonic!"

Well, in color even he complains about his own talking.   In Super Sonic Galaxy I didn't feel him that talkative... or maybe I just got very good at ignoring him.

Is it me or is it a thing in modern animation to have a guy acting "crazy" with wacky poses, while basically staying immobile?
It's probably more apparent in video games rather than "real" animation shows, but still...

Haven't seen it over all animation yet, but far as Sonic's concerned, yes.

Saw a modern show called Unclue Grandfather or something like that, which went all over the place with the visuals and events happening, so it's not with all animation.
And far as Vieogames go, the only other... "Kid orientated" games I play are the the Lego games.
They definitly use the characters visual abilities and interactive sets to spice up the scenes.

The only thing I noticed is that the "4th wall breaking snarky guy who's detached to everything" main character is used wayyy too often these days. Everyone wants to have a Deadpool character, forgetting that he's funny because he's the only one in an otherwise serious universe.

Spider-Man is also funny...in fact there was a really good episode of ultimate Spider-Man that effectively compared and contrasted them.

The only major difference between the two aside from powers and sanity is that Deadpool does not give a damn about responsibility, and he's basically what Spider-Man would be like if he also did not care about responsibility.

Or something like that.

And there's also the fact Spiderman is much more vulnerarble then Deadpool, as Deadpool has regenerating health and doesn't worry about having an old sick aunt or any of that.
So deadpool can afford to just goof around.

"The only major difference between the two aside from powers and sanity"

And unless I'm mistaken both of those tie into why spiderman cares more about responsibility...

Hum... I might have been playing too many lower budget video games to get this impression.
Those rely a lot on kind of "dating sim like" narrative, which always give the impression the characters change pose while being immobile. XD

But Sonic is not low budget, so I guess it's why he is rightfully getting more flak for using this cheaper animation technique.

True, gotta admit I don't play many modern Videogames.
Not much time with all the animations I need to make.
And considering the gap between games for kids and games for adults keeps increasing, I feel more and more uncomfortable playing kid's games, even if I don't have an issue playing any new happy colorful platformers on the ps2/ gamecube I may find.

Well, I am probably guilty of being a fan of the indie game scene. Most game I bought in the last three years were steam based low-budget ventures with an original concept (for kids or not). This probably blurred my perception. (but after all, my initial comment was a question starting by "is it me, or...")

But still, I feel like we are starting to see those techniques in higher budget stuff in which they should not belong. Their reasoning is probably "those indie guys can sell with simple techniques like this, so why not us ?".

I may be full of crap. But I guess I can always fall back on "Sonic does it so I am right for at least one case" XD

I do really enjoy the animation style of the newer games compared to...say the awkward clunky motion of Sonic Adventure.  However, they do tend to exaggerate the movements and the speech to a point where I think I'm watching a really stupid episode of Power Rangers...and THATS really saying something...=P

Ohhh, don't get me wrong, I think the animation quality of modern games is fantastic, it looks really great.
Fluent movements, lot's of face expressions.

I just get the sense as an animator that the Adventure games balanced out the crappy animation by having  more set dressing, characters interacting with the envirement and things happening.

While from colors on, most cutscenes are just people standing around on a flat surface talking to each other, so everyone spazzing out like mad is the only thing the animators can do to keep things visually interesting.

Hah, moving like the Power Rangers indeed. They did it to compensate for the lack of face expressions at least, tough.
