Sigh, I hate cutting off there, we haven't even gotten to the actual point of these video's yet.
Now it almost feels like a regular review show, ghah.
But yeah, stuck untill I get some specific unleashed footage.
This is all untill I can continue.

Thanks to Alex as level design consulant.

Actually, Sonic Heroes was rushed because Sony forced them to port to PS2 and abandon all their work on Gamecube and Xbox.

Never played the Sonic rush title, but the rush title serves a precursor to the Sonic unleashed boost fest gameplay which works brilliantly in 3D. The ability to master the level while moving at Super Sonic speed really cemented that Sonic is indeed the fastest thing alive! Ha, beat that DC Flash!XD

Sonic 2 and 3 and knuckles are my favorites, because my sister always wants to be sonic so I have to play tails, which is fine it just means I am indesturcible and she isn't, but I make it a point to be a suicidal as possible, it makes boss fights funny as heck

Neat and funny to watch the during the second part of the first level in S3&K when you can let him get hit by bombs as the screen will just push him forwards as the bombs hit him

I find Sonic Heroes a good game despite it's flaws.
Sonic Rush was okay to me but I really didn't like it because of the many instant deaths (I got a lot of game overs in that game).
good work so far and hopefully you'll find people to help you find footage...

Find more footage on your own? You should ask Sonic for help and just be yourself by lecturing away. XD
But seriously, they abandoned you?

Sonic never returns my phone calls.

Heh, most of them were strangers I don't really know. But yeah, most of them never responded.
Finally got 2 people to help me tough.

Whoa... Sonic Rush punishes you for going fast?
A game that make you learn by dying doesn't sound very well thought out, somehow... ^^;

Something I read in a book about game-making, "Secrets of the Sages"
Never make the player learn by dying. It just ticks people off.

For example, if I'm leading Lara Croft down a spooky corridor and some spikes just pop out of nowhere, my reaction is, "Dah! This damn game cheats!"
However, if there are holes in the floor where they'd pop out, bloodstains, bones, etc I'd be more inclined to be cautious, or kick myself saying, "I should have been more observant!"

both sonic rush games have a good bit and a bad bit i find, sonic rush one had a better story but sonic rush adventure had better game play... one of the things i liked about rush was the two storys, but they took that away in rush adventure... and in rush adventure there was less character development. in rush one blaze had to learn how to be a friend, and you could see that as the story progressed.

Well, Rush adventure had Marine's character development.
Sure, it was handled poorly, she's annoying and hyperactive until the very last cutscene when she's suddenly more responsible..Heh.

But can't say Blaze's development was handeled very good either. But for that I refer back to my Sonic Rush in 7 minutes animation.

But, as we're talking about level design here,Sonic Rush adventure wins.

Sonic heroes was fun with its levels, but clearly pointed out, the least characters in the game WERE ALL the flying types....you never used them in battle, you never REALLY needed them either, I just used them when I wanted to get somewhere That REQUIRED me to use him....get your power or Speed character his 3 level ups and BOOM! You can get through the ENTIRE level no problem.

You have pointed out exactly what I like about the platforming in sonic, most of the time it KNOWS you want to go fast or that you want to pay attention on parts where if you screw up, you will either DIE or be falling to a point in the level where you have to redo the entire boring slow bit again! ARGH!

Hi there

Hehehe, once again a interesting talk there on the level designs of Sonic there.

I have recently played Sonic Generations on the 3DS and I do think the level design in the last few levels are pretty cheap. Example: Like the zip line where you have to dodge the rotating fireballs which your likely to hit most of the time. But once you've passed it, the game gives you a surprise kick to the knee with a bunch of spikes that hurt you with no way of knowing or avoiding correctly. So annoying.

Anyways, fab job on the vid Roger ^^ Keep up the good work

Euan

Yeah, Sonic generations 3ds has a few problems.

Hah, I knew Classic green hill zone was a literal remake of the one for the megadrive when I first played it, but only when I replayed it for this video I realized Classic Casino night, classic Mushroom hill zone , Modern Water palace and modern Resort something are all remakes of the corrresponding megadrive/ Ds games.

I see where you are going with the whole platformed that is like "Wheeee" *launch in air and then time your jumps and movements.* and then back the "Wheee" some of the newer games (and by newer i mean sonic heroes, shadow, and unleashed. -w-) they tend to be a bit...meh with their elements, its not as sudden where you need to think at a seconds moment and kind of rounds out the edges, letting you have time to think when the fighting parts come up but even though there are parts like that im still about speed. (on a side note, you need any film bits for unleashed, or you have some already in process, also I played a game that literally makes you dumb while watchin this, so my responses are not as intelligent)

No, still needing film bits of Unleashed. playing aroudn with my own camera now.
Usually I use youtube but i want to highlight a few special segments but all I find on youtube or S rank speed record video's that skip half the stages.

Fraid not, the Wii and PS2 version may have the same cutscenes/ music and level themes, but everything else is unqiue, it's made by a diffrent team, so the programming, level design and such are diffrent.

I really enjoyed Sonic Heroes.

I think the reason was because it was the first Sonic game I picked up in about twelve years or so (I was four when I watched my sisters play Sonic the Hedgehog). Being a teenager in middle school with little confidence, the game gave me a sense of empowerment. Playing as a hero with teammates was fun and made me feel like I accomplish something. It was a nice easy way to get me back into the Sonic franchise. Simple yet fun.

Sonic Rush was a little challenging, especially when I had to get the Chaos Emeralds in those special stages. I really enjoyed playing as Blaze because she got a lot of lift in her jumps her style was easy for me to work with.

Overall, unless the gameplay starts to get under my skin, I don't really think about it. I just play the game to do my best and to see how the story goes.

Over course, nostalgia and personal experience goes a long way.

Thing is, I don't think too mcuh about level design either. DOn't think i had all of this in my mind while playing the game, just vague general emotions.
It's only since teh last 2 months I've been replaying all Sonic games in a row, breaking my observations and feelings down.

Ah.

I guess the thing that irritates me is when people gripe constantly about the gameplay when I'm thinking "Hey, you guys wanted this right?" Especially when it comes to Sonic 06. Every time I hear a rant that is all the way into this year I just keep thinking "I GET IT! I GET IT! I GET IT! SONIC 06 WASN'T THE BEST GAME IN THE WORLD SO SHUT UP ALREADY!!!!"

Ahem, sorry about that. Anyway, the gameplay for Sonic is almost perfect. I'm not saying it will ever be perfect, every game has at least one or two glitches. But at any rate, it's starting to define speed sections and platform sections where you have to look around you and strategize.

What bothers me is that those rants are usually about thingso n the surface everyone already talks about.
I like to go one step beyond.

But yeah, no worries, no Sonic 2006 ranting here. that game is already beaten into the ground..
